Schumacher’s Shanty is a Stockbridge bar that specializes in homemade pizza, subs and wraps.
The bar has five large-screen TVs for patrons to watch sporting events and sometimes have karaoke and DJs. The business offers a side room for birthdays, anniversaries, retirement parties, etc. at no charge. It also sponsors an annual bike show with the second show scheduled for June 8.
The previous owner of Schumacher’s Shanty turned the building into a pool and pizza hall and then a bar. Prior to that, it was Hemauer’s Grocery Store for many years with Dick and Mary Schumacher (no relation to the present owners) being the last owners of the grocery store. Early history shows that the building was built and used by a group called the “Oddfellows.” The current owners—Jim and Jodi Schumacher— purchased the building, which sat empty for about 18 months, in February 2012 and opened April 2, 2012.
They did extensive remodeling before opening. They contracted a hardwood floor company to sand and refinish the original wood floor. The restrooms were redesigned as well as the bar area and kitchen. Tile floor was added in those areas with Jim and Jodi doing most of that work as well as painting all the rooms. The entire “store front,” which had the original single pane, large glass windows along with an old wooden entry door, was replaced with energy-efficient double-hung windows and a new steel door. A new steel door also was added at the south entrance where a handicap accessible ramp is located.
The couple plans to expand their menu in the future as Jodi enjoys cooking and continually looks for new ideas for foods that can be made in the pizza ovens that contain large stones, considered excellent for flavor. They also plan on putting a bait shop in the back part of the building which Jim has been working on, but progress has been slow.
Jim is a graduate of Chilton High and Jodi of Kiel High. Their kids—Jordan Schumacher and Blake Boeckman— work in the kitchen with one additional helper and they also have four hired bartenders.
Schumacher’s Shanty is located at 101 S. Military Rd. For more information call (920) 439-1232 or find them on Facebook.
