you do. I have a passion for health care.”

Schuldes was at his previous clinic position for 15 years so he is not one to bounce around. As he talks about his fondness for the Hilbert clinic, the patients there and his staff, it seems likely he will make ThedaCare Physicians in Hilbert his home for a long time.

“I like rural medicine,” he said. “Some days it’s a challenge being the only provider, but I have an excellent staff.”

A goal for the future

Schuldes said he would like to see the patient load continue to grow in Hilbert to the point where another care provider could be brought on board, thus keeping the clinic open when he is on vacation as well as giving him another person to bounce care ideas off. Schuldes already can do the latter, of course, via any of the highly skilled physicians and other medical personnel within the ThedaCare family.

ThedaCare Physicians is a group of more than 200 doctors, physicians assistants and nurse practitioners offering care at 20 locations through the Fox Valley, Shawano and Waupaca areas. Its physicians have earned national recognition from independent agencies over the years for their quality of care.

Those experts in their respective medical areas also can assist the Hilbert clinic in its ongoing mission. “The mission is to improve the health of the community,” Schuldes said. He and his staff continue to see patients with chronic diseases—including diabetes and heart disease—and they are taking an aggressive approach toward managing those diseases. They also strongly encourage preventative tests as appropriate to try to detect cancers such as colon or breast as early as possible.

how they take care of a person’s medical condition(s), always with an eye toward improving the patient’s daily life while keeping medical costs down. “Our clinic has one of the highest quality scores,” he said.

“A lot of people do very, very well with their prevention,” Schuldes added.

ThedaCare Physicians also does a good job, Schuldes said, in studying time usage to maximize the minutes caregivers can spend with patients rather than doing paperwork. “We do some really cool stuff at ThedaCare,” he said about those efficiencies. “Where am I most valuably needed?”

An occasional suture

The Hilbert clinic is open until 5 p. m. Mondays through Thursdays and until noon on Fridays. It is not an emergency room, but the staff has been known to do a suture or two or help a person with a serious condition until further help can be arranged.

ThedaCare Physicians also tries to be a good citizen in the area with events such as its $30 sports physicals planned for this Wednesday, July 25 from 1 to 6 p. m. Half of the $30 fee will be donated to the booster club of the athlete’s choice. Appointments are preferred (853-3444) but walk-ins are welcome. The green WIAA forms must be filled out prior to coming to the event.

When those athletes leave, they are likely to be thanked for their time and for choosing ThedaCare Physicians—something which Schuldes said sometimes catches his patients off guard. “Their time is as valuable as our’s,” he said. “You try to make it a good experience.”

Judging by the growing use of Theda-Care Physicians in Hilbert, that is exactly what Schuldes and his experienced staff have been doing.
