The 2011-’12 academic year brought new leadership to Moraine Park Technical College.
Dr. Sheila Ruhland was welcomed as the college’s new president in July, succeeding Dr. Gayle Hytrek who served as Moraine Park’s president since July 2004.
In her first eight months as president, Ruhland has met with many organizations throughout the Moraine Park District to find out what employers are seeking and how Moraine Park can meet their needs. “These meetings have allowed me to hear firsthand current and future workforce education and training needs,” Ruhland said. “I also learned the support our employers have for the Moraine Park advisory committees and programs that offer internships for our students.”
With the start of the spring semester, Ruhland has continued to engage in conversations regarding both the present and future of Moraine Park. “Discussions continue with academic deans to review the programs we currently offer, and future program possibilities. We are also seeking additional short-term training opportunities specifically in the manufacturing and welding trade areas,” she said.
Ruhland holds a Doctor of Philosophy degree in Continuing and Vocational Education with a minor in Educational Administration, and a master of science degree in Continuing and Vocational Education, both from the University of Wisconsin-Madison. She earned her bachelor of science degree in Marketing and Distributive Education from the University of Wisconsin-Stout in Menomonie, and her associate degree from Madison Area Technical College.
Prior to Moraine Park, Ruhland served as vice president of instruction at Clatsop Community College in Astoria, Ore.; assistant professor in the Department of Work, Community and Family Education at the University of Minnesota; dean of business at Western Technical College in La Crosse; dean of business and marketing at Southwest Wisconsin Technical College in Fennimore; and as an instructor at Madison Area Technical College in Madison.
