Kiel Progress briefs 2012
Plans under way for ‘12 Kiel Picnic

The 2011 Kiel Community Picnic was a huge success, organizers said, and they are looking forward to seeing everyone at the 2012 Kiel Community Picnic.

This year’s picnic is scheduled to kick off Thursday night, Aug. 9 with the traditional alcohol-free Family Night featuring the Dorf Kapelle Band and a drawing for a game system which will be available to kids 16 and under.

A weekend of free entertainment will be led off on Friday night by the Kiel Municipal Band and The Toys. For the polka lovers, Jerry Schneider will perform Saturday morning followed by the Happy Schnapps Combo in the band shell later that afternoon. Finishing up the evening will be Johnny Wad.

Sunday morning will start with the Association of Commerce Parade down Fremont Street, followed by the Kiel High School Show Choir performance in the park. Stay to close the weekend with Vic Ferrari.

Rides and games for the young or young at heart will be provided by Christman amusements with three days of wristbands for rides available.

The food stand will be serving up a weekend of food featuring grilled hamburgers, brats, hot dogs, smokehouse BBQ seasoned chicken and the famous steak sandwiches along with Friday night’s exclusive pork loin sandwich. To quench one’s thirst enjoy a wide variety of beverages including assorted sodas, Bud and Miller products as well as some specialties such as Mike’s Hard Lemonade, Jack Daniels Down Home Punch, and Spotted Cow.

This year’s raffle will once again include a top prize of $1,000. Tickets will be available for sale from many local merchants or from members of the Kiel Lions Club and Kiel Optimist Club starting around June 1.

New to last year’s picnic was the first BBQ Grill Off. A total of 14 teams from three counties came out on Saturday morning with grills and secret BBQ recipes in hand in an attempt to win the top prize of $300 and the bragging rights which go with it. Last year’s winners were Jim Spangenberg and Mike Thurwachter of Team Cobra Spit.

Entry forms and grill-off rules will be available in the local newspapers starting in June, or stop at K&M Piggly Wiggly to pick one up. This year’s registration fee will be $50 per team and that will include two racks of baby back ribs, a 10x10 grilling area, and the judging container. Teams will need to provide their own grills (gas or charcoal). If a team has sponsor advertising such as shirts and banners, they are allowed.

In closing the picnic would never be a success without the help of all the volunteers from the community. Organizers expressed appreciation to all who helped last year. If anyone would be interested in volunteering to help out with this year’s picnic, please contact Al Schreiber at (920) 242-5155.
