Playback cites first anniversary

Playback Movies & Games, 2120 Wisconsin Ave. (STH 32/57), New Holstein observed its one-year anniversary in late January.

Owner Krystina Sherry said over 630 memberships accounts have been opened in a little over a year. With many of those memberships including family members, she estimates around 1,500 people are listed on her membership database.

Memberships are free unless the member wishes to upgrade to a $20 per year Premium membership. Sherry said many people have started with a free membership and then upgraded after they see the many specials and savings available to Premium members, more than paying back the $20 over the course of a year.

Sherry also said she has been pleased to see so many people coming in to rent or buy movies or video games from so many different places beyond New Holstein, including Chilton, Stockbridge, Kiel, the “Holyland” communities, Elkhart Lake, Valders, and elsewhere.

Playback Movies & Games is Calumet County’s largest movie and video game store. When it opened last January it offered about 4,200 titles, but in just one year’s time that number has soared to close to 7,000, Sherry said. From an entire wall with the latest releases to historic movies such as “Gone With the Wind,” Playback Movies & Games has it—or if they do not, Sherry can almost always special order it whether the person wants to own it or just rent it. “I probably special ordered 20 movies in one recent week alone,” she said.

The large selection is a great way for people to catch up on their movie watching, Sherry said. In today’s busy world, a movie might be advertised on TV as coming to theatres, but time constraints prevent people from seeing it in the theatre or even as it circulates and then disappears from digital sites. “When that Sunday afternoon or Wednesday night finally comes with a few free hours, stop in and find that movie from 1994, 2004, or 2014 that you always wanted to see and never did,” Sherry said.

Even before she opened Playback Movies & Games, Sherry said she intended the business to be at least as heavy into video games as movies, if not more. To that end she has undertaken an expansion project in which the children’s movie area has moved into its own separate room allowing for the expansion of the video gaming area. In addition to video games, Playback also offers new and used equipment and gaming systems for purchase.

Classic arcade games also are set up inside Playback to have some more fun.

Playback Movies & Games is continually offering specials, promotions, and contests. Just a couple examples are the recent Oscars predictions contest with the winner receiving free movies for a year, or the person who was surprised with a gift basket upon becoming the store’s 500th member.
