The many people who watch home improvement shows on TV know that the sky is the limit these days for bathroom and kitchen fixtures. From showers with multiple sprayer heads to kitchen sinks which turn on and off with the touch of a finger, there are a lot of options available to homeowners. “Black toilets were big a few years ago,” Schmidlkofer said.

For the most part, however, people in this area are fairly conservative when it comes to replacing sinks, showers, tubs, dishwashers, etc. That is fine with Schmidlkofer—he will do whatever the customer wants, or provide his own input based on his experience if the customer is not quite sure what they might want.

Schmidlkofer resides between New Holstein and Chilton and has a small

shop in Brillion. The majority of his work is done in Calumet County, but he also goes into surrounding counties as well. Wife Jen continues to help with the business’ bookwork, and Schmidlkofer also employs a part-time assistant.

“It’s definitely growing,” Schmidlkofer said of the business. “I’ve been very happy with the growth. I like to think I offer a personal service to people. I think I’m friendly and cordial with people.”

When there is no water coming into the house because of a frozen line during the coldest winter on record, or when the basement is filling with water because the sump pump failed, people appreciate “friendly and cordial” almost as much as they do “available and prompt.”
