Braun’s Ranch going strong after 3 years
Family hospitality tradition has a firm foundation in Elkhart
By Glenn Braun
The Braun family keeps things hopping at Braun’s Ranch in Elkhart Lake, with four members as part of the team, including, from left, Montana, Chelsea, Bridget and Glenn.

It’s been a great three years at Braun’s Ranch. We still have 90 percent of employees from the start back in April of 2011.

We created a family bond between the employees and our loyal daily customers along with all the tourist and surrounding community customers.

We lost one of our owners, Glen M. Braun Jr., but to a happy adventure. He reopened the Braun’s Deer Run golf Course in Brillion in April 2013 and is very successful with a super menu. Deer Run is open seven days a week and averaging about 300 customers on Friday nights.

Our other son, David, along with his business partner, Jason Hunsader, runs the Altona Supper Club—one of the premier restaurants in Calumet County.

It is very rewarding as a dad to see the outstanding work ethics of my boys in the restaurant business as they started out standing on milk crates doing dishes at Cedar Lake Resort back in the ‘80s.

Wife, daughters key players

At Braun’s Ranch we have our other part of our family holding down our family business at Braun’s Ranch Supper Club with my wife, Bridget, overseeing the management of the bar. Our daughter Chelsea hostesses and oversees the restaurant division and our youngest daughter Montana does busing, dish-washing and overall managing the salad bar and buffet.

On holidays, Mother’s Day, Easter we average about 800 to 900 people per holiday and we turned away about 300 people this year. People call in over a month ahead of time to get good dinnertime schedule to get seated.

We run daily specials with our awesome liver and onions, our baked haddock and pork chop special for $7.95. Our most popular special on Wednesday and Thursday night is our broasted chicken dinner which includes potatoes and gravy, homemade stuffing, fresh steamed veggies, coleslaw, rolls for $5.95 per person.

We average about 1,500 pieces of broasted chicken sold per week. We have our own recipe for marinating seasonings and broasting going back to 1985 at Cedar Lake Resort.

Sunday morning brunch is a big hit for us with Chef Matt Bornemann making his famous omelets made to order starting at 8:30 a. m. to 1:30 p. m. in front of you.

We also have the same recipe for our famous BBQ ribs going back 30 years with our head chef Brent Bunting adding a few of his own ideas to spice it up.

One of our main entrees is our famous pretzel chicken dinner with a touch of honey dijon. We served 400 dinners in two hours at Elkhart Lake’s famous Downtown Night last August.

Friday night we have our super land and sea buffet along with fresh crab legs, Black Angus prime rib cut in front of you, eat and peel shrimp, baked haddock, pork chops, stir fry zesty shrimp, homemade soups and salad bar for $17.95 or the early bird special is $3 off before 5 p. m. with a ticket and eat at your leisure 4 to 9 p. m.

Saturday night is our meat lover’s buffet with fresh cut Black Angus prime rib, our famous BBQ ribs, broasted chicken, tenderloin tips, juicy pork chops, shrimp, baked haddock, zesty chicken wings, chicken dumpling soup and chef’s choice soup along with our huge salad bar for $17.95 and $3 off before 5 p. m. with a ticket and eat at your leisure from 4 to 9 p. m.

Sunday brunch takes place from 9:00 a. m. to 1:30 p. m. every Sunday including omelets made-to-order with buffet for $8.95 with kids under 8 eating for free.

Our light appetite with made-to-order omelets includes potatoes for $5.95. Our buffet includes eggs, bacon, ribs, sausage, broasted chicken, French toast, veggies, homemade soup and salad bar, desserts, muffins and again including our made-to-order omelets.

Our broasted chicken dinner includes all white or dark and includes mashed potatoes, gravy, homemade stuffing, caramelized carrots, coleslaw and rolls for $5.95, serving 1 to 7:30 p. m.

We are celebrating our three years in business in Elkhart Lake.

Every last Wednesday of the month we have our antique classic car show, raffles, door prizes, etc. from 4 to 8 p. m.

We take trips from the Ranch to many different sites. In past years we went to New York, Deadwood, Nashville, and Branson, Mo.

This year, we are going to Cape Cod and Niagara Falls October 3-11. Thre are still 10 seats remaining as we just put it together. Call (920) 323-2429 for details.

We would like to thank Elkhart Lake, Plymouth, Kiel, New Holstein, Chilton, Valders, Sheboygan, Sheboygan Falls, Cascade and all other surrounding communities for their support throughout the year, along with the hundreds of Plymouth Rock campers who support us daily during their season.
