Kiel Progress briefs 2014
Plans under way for Kiel Picnic Aug. 7-10

The 2013 Kiel Community Picnic was a huge success, organizers said, and they are looking forward to seeing everyone at the 2014 Kiel Community Picnic.

This year’s picnic is scheduled to kick off Thursday night, Aug. 7 with the traditional alcohol-free Family Night and a drawing for a game system which will be available to kids 16 and under.

A weekend of free entertainment will be led off on Friday night by the Kiel Municipal Band and Johnny Wad. For the polka lovers, Jerry Schneider will perform Saturday morning followed by the Happy Schnapps Combo and Pat McCurdy in the band shell later that afternoon. To finish up the evening look forward to hearing a new but yet to be determined band in the main tent.

Sunday morning will start with the Association of Commerce Parade down Fremont Street, followed by the Kiel High School Show Choir performance in the park. Stay to close the weekend with Vic Ferrari.

Rides and games for the young or young at heart will be provided by Christman amusements with three days of wristbands for rides available.

The food stand will be serving up a weekend of food featuring grilled hamburgers, brats, hot dogs, smokehouse BBQ seasoned chicken and the famous steak sandwiches. To quench one’s thirst enjoy a wide variety of beverages including assorted sodas, Bud and Miller products as well as some specialties such as Mike’s Hard Lemonade, Jack Daniels Down Home Punch, and Spotted Cow.

This year’s raffle once again will include a top prize of $1,000. Tickets will be available for sale from many local merchants or from members of the Kiel Lions Club and Kiel Optimist Club starting around June 1.

The fourth annual amateur BBQ grill-off is scheduled to be held Saturday morning starting at 10 a. m. rain or shine. Entry forms and grill-off rules will be available in the local newspaper starting in May, or stop at K&M Piggly Wiggly to pick one up.

This year’s registration fee will be $50 per team. Teams will need to provide their own grills (gas or charcoal). If a team has sponsor advertising such as shirts and banners, they are allowed.

In closing the picnic would never be a success without the help of all the volunteers from the community. Organizers expressed appreciation to all who helped last year. If anyone would be interested in volunteering to help out with this year’s picnic, please contact Al Schreiber at (920) 242-5155.
