When looking for a pickup truck, one might consider many factors. But the bottom line to most truck enthusiasts is power.

To that end, the Dodge Ram 1500, with its latest introductions in the 2013 model year has power to burn.

Taking a spin with a Dodge Ram 1500 from Central Garage in Chilton provided a power rush, getting behind the wheel of an impressive power plant. Ram proves itself equally adept at heavy duty projects and providing comfort for long distance riding.

This new pickup from Dodge exudes power at every turn of the ride. It’s V6 engine boasts 42% more horsepower and 13% more torque than the old V6, while its Hemi V8 counterpart boosted gas mileage by 20 percent.

Rated at 18 miles per gallon in the city and 25 on the highway, the Dodge Ram 1500’s fuel efficiency is the best in its class. Part of the reason for that success is the new eight-speed transmission a standard feature on all the V6 Ram engines.

In the 2013 rollout, Dodge replaced the former standard Ram engine with a 3.6 liter Pentastar engine that offers 305 horsepower and 269 pound-feet of torque.

Taking off

After taking the big step up into the Ram’s cab, I was ready to test the moxie of this truck. With a little help from Stacy Schweitzer and John Martin, I overcame some of my apprehensions, finding out that the absence of a shifter was intentional.

The transmission is shifted by a round knob just below the entertainment center. Dial D for drive in other words.

Easing forward from the parking lot, the feel of the wheel gave the driver a sense of command, yet comforts alongside the power.

On our sojourn, the Dodge Ram and I found some country roads west of Chilton to put the truck through its paces. Again, the handling, quiet and comforts of the ride were excellent. Ram just has that feel of being a well-engineered full-size truck.

Some of the key features of the new Dodge Ram 1500 include: n best in class gas mileage;

n power increases, moving to a 305 horsepower engines, and 90 more horses if you opt for the Hemi V8 with optional diesel;

n best in class aerodynamics; n air suspension to assist with mileage ride control, loading and clearance;
